Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre (SVICC)

Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre was constructed at Domaine Les Pailles to add to the tourism potential of Mauritius by making it an attractive destination for holding international conferences. In 2001, the Government of India extended a US$ 100 million Line of Credit (LOC) for the development of IT in Mauritius. A part of this LOC was utilized for the construction of the prestigious Cyber Tower in Mauritius. Out of the US$ 100 million LOC, an amount of US $ 7.5 million was utilized for the construction of Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre. Another US$ 7.5 million was provided by the Government of India as an outright grant for this project.

A Memorandum of Understanding for financing the Convention Centre by India was signed by the then External Affairs Minister of India Shri Yashwant Sinha and the Foreign Minister of Mauritius Mr. A. K. Gayan in October 2003. The Convention Centre was also constructed by the same consortium of the Indian companies -M/s Larsen & Toubro and Shapoorji Pallonji- who constructed the Cyber Tower in Ebene. The Convention Centre was dedicated to the Mauritian people by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh during his visit to Mauritius in 2005. A UN Conference on Small Islands Development States was held at the Centre in early 2005. The South African Development Community (SADC) Conference on Poverty and Development was also held in 2008. The Centre has developed into a multi-functional space for the Government of Mauritius to host a wide-array of national and international events.

The Convention Centre is equipped with the most modern facilities. The Plenary Hall has a seating capacity of 2,500 persons and standing capacity of 8,000 persons. The Centre has conference rooms, an atrium cum banquet hall, a well equipped business and press centre, a cyber-cafe and a library. The Convention Centre is the first of its kind in Mauritius and in the entire Indian Ocean region. The Centre is an architectural jewel merging itself with the landscape overlooking the mountains and also a proud symbol of the enduring friendship between the two countries.
